Jenna & Aaron’s Unforgettable Wedding at Larrington Hall, Barnard Castle

An Alternative UK Wedding Shot on Film, Super 8, and Studio Flash

Last month, I had the absolute joy of photographing Jenna & Aaron’s wedding at the magical Larrington Hall in Barnard Castle — a day that perfectly blended heart, fashion, fun, and total individuality.

This wasn’t your traditional white-linen affair. From the moment I arrived, I knew this was an alternative wedding done right — filled with style, authenticity, and character. With my assistant by my side, we captured the entire day on a blend of 35mm and medium format film, Super 8mm, and digital photos and video, using the full scope of my hybrid wedding kit.

The Process – Editorial Meets Documentary

My approach to weddings is a curated mix of editorial storytelling, candid documentary, and fashion-forward portraiture. I want every gallery to feel like a blend of Vogue and your personal memories.

On Jenna & Aaron’s day, we leaned into the grandeur of Larrington Hall’s old-world charm, juxtaposing its historic backdrop with modern editorial compositions and raw, documentary captures. From spontaneous laughter in the courtyard to stylised flash-lit portraits in hidden corners of the hall, we made room for every moment.

Whether it was an elegant kiss beneath a crumbling stone archway or the chaos of confetti, I captured it all — honestly and artfully.

Shot on Film, Super 8mm & Digital

Throughout the day, I used a mix of:

  • Medium format film (for those dreamy, detail-rich portraits)

  • 35mm film (to document the narrative moments with soul and grain)

  • Super 8mm (to bring movement and nostalgia to life)

  • Digital cameras + video (for crisp, clean coverage and long-form memories)

We also lit key portraits using studio-grade portable flash, adding drama and depth without losing the intimacy of the moment. This setup allowed me to capture Jenna in her statement dress like she was stepping off a magazine cover — yet still very much grounded in her real, beautiful day.

The Handcrafted Magic – From Negatives to Prints

Once the film is shot, that’s just the beginning.

The negatives are developed and scanned by hand — frame by frame — and from there, I create handprints in my darkroom. Every photograph is carefully interpreted to reflect the mood and tone of the moment. Whether warm and grainy or crisp and moody, these aren’t just digital files. They’re artworks.

This extra step is what transforms a photograph into a keepsake — something that feels like part of your family history already.

A Dolly Parton Surprise & All the Good Vibes

A major highlight of the day? The Dolly Parton impersonator.

Yes, you read that right — a full-on surprise set from “Dolly” herself, complete with rhinestones, charm, and sing-along anthems. She had the whole crowd dancing and crying-laughing, and her set became an unexpected centrepiece of the evening.

It was wild. It was unforgettable. It was so Jenna & Aaron.

A Portrait Gallery to Remember

Here’s a look at some of my favourite portraits from the day — from editorial flash-lit couples’ shots to quiet black-and-white film moments in the garden.

Why Larrington Hall Is the Perfect Alternative Wedding Venue

If you’re planning an alternative wedding in the UK, Larrington Hall is one of those rare gems that balances history, charm, and mystery. Its textures, its rooms, and its grounds provide endless inspiration for couples who want something a little less ordinary.
